The Cypress View Foundation was officially opened November 9, 1960,
with Dr. J. Donovan Ross, Minister of Health representing the Alberta
Government. The Cypress View Lodge, which was the first lodge to be
built, was one of thirty-one senior citizen homes that were opened
simultaneously. Alderman Cliff Adams, Medicine Hat, Chairman of the
Board of Directors accepted an illuminated scroll from Dr. J. Donovan
Ross, on behalf of the Cypress View Lodge and the Board of Directors.
The people given the responsibility of selecting a site for the
foundation were Mr. Ted Herman, Schuler, from the Improvement District
#11 appointed by the Provincial Government and Alderwoman Helen Beny
Gibson appointed by the City of Medicine Hat.
The present site of five acres was chosen for the view of the Cypress
Hills, the City of Medicine Hat and the possibility for further
expansion. The first municipalities involved were Improvement District
#11, Improvement District #22, Irvine, Medicine Hat and Redcliff.
The Department of Public Works of the Province of Alberta designed the
Cypress View Lodge. The building was approximately three-quarters
completed when a board was appointed to take over the administration
of the lodge. Originally there were two boards, the Board of Directors,
who were the decision making body and the Board of Management, who
were involved in the day to day running of the lodge. The Boards were
incorporated into the Board of Directors in 1964.
The Wild Rose Lodge was the next lodge to open under Cypress View
Foundation in 1969, then the Teeoda Lodge and Apartments in 1977. At
this time, all of the lodges were in separate buildings on the same
site. This continued until 1990 when the Alberta Mortgage and Housing
Corporation started a regeneration program on the entire facility. The
intent was to bring all the lodges together under one roof and to
upgrade them to the new codes and standards. In 1992 the new Cypress
View Wing was opened, in 1993 the Teeoda Wing was opened, and in 1994
the Wild Rose Wing was opened. Since then the dining room has been
expanded (which is central to all the wings), a solarium was built,
and a new front recreation/common area was added. Local Medicine Hat
residents often refer to the Foundation as "The Teeoda", but it has
always been called the Cypress View Foundation.
The Cypress View Foundation has been providing affordable housing for
low to moderate-income seniors since 1960. It continues to look at
ways of improving services to its residents and excelling at
making them feel at home.
Assisted Living Wing
The Cypress View Foundation is in the process of adding 40 assisted living units on to their current facility. This will give them the ability to offer additional personal care services to residents. This will allow seniors to stay longer in the Cypress View Foundation and allow couples to live together longer. Construction is currently underway and completion is expected in the fall of 2008.
